The surrounding terrain where you spawn is in fact quite boring. But don't be fooled by that as underneath spawn lures something way more exciting.
Dig straight down. It will only take 2-3 blocks of digging until you fall into a tunnel leading down to a cave system. Walk further down in the tunnel for a short bit until you find a wall made out of cobble stone on your left.

Break through the blocks and you will find the dungeon.
