The spawn is far out in the ocean on the larger island of the little island group consisting of three. If you turn around and swim (or fly) in that direction for a while you will see the beginning of a larger mushroom island.
It's not exactly an island, but close to it, as it's connected with a few blocks with the main land which is the starting of a mesa biome. It's beautifully shaped with an area looking like a bay area and lots of shifting terrain.
